IIT Patna: 21 May 2024 :: The 10th Convocation of Indian Institute of Technology Patna was held on 21st May 2024 at the institute newly constructed auditorium. This was the first convocation being held at the institute auditorium. The event was graced by the Chief Guest Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, Director General, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Secretary Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), the Guest of honour R. K. Pathak, Secretary Technology Development Board, New Delhi, and Dr. Anand Deshpande, Chairman Board of Governors, IIT Patna and Founder and Chairman of the Persistent Systems, Board Members and Members of Senate of IIT Patna.
The Chief Guest, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, extended heartfelt congratulations to the graduating students, expressing gratitude to the Chairman, Dr. Anand Deshpande, and all distinguished attendees. Emphasizing the global recognition of IITs for academic excellence and innovation, the Chief Guest highlighted the importance of using education not only for technological advancement but also for fostering peace. She highlighted, UNESCO’s theme for this year, ‘learning for lasting peace,’ which highlights the need for both internal and external peace. She urged graduates to balance science with humanity, embrace unconventional paths, and view work as a source of fulfilment. The speech encouraged graduates to maximize their potential, embrace opportunities, and continuously learn which is also in line with National Education Policy 2020. Concluding with a shloka, the Chief Guest underscored the importance of knowledge, humility, and purpose for achieving true happiness and success. She wished each and every young graduates to play an important role in seeing India as a developed country in 2047.
The event started with the academic procession entering the convocation venue followed by the invocation through the National song. The chairman BOG’s then declared the 10th convocation of IIT Patna open. Mementos were presented to the dignitaries on the dais.
At the onset of the event Director IIT Patna, Prof. T. N. Singh welcomed all the eminent dignitaries, the graduating students and their parents, the guest, members of media from electronic and print, institute faculty, and staff. Highlighting the achievements of the institute, he said that in the recently released Asia University Ranking, IIT Patna has moved up to 163rd position. In “India Rankings 2023 by NIRF MoE”, IIT Patna is positioned 41st among engineering institutions of the country and 66th for overall ranking. He spoke about the chief guest Dr. N. Kalaiselvi academic achievements including her involvement of e-mobility in India. About Guest of Honour Shri R.K. Pathak, he spoke about his involvement in various challenging assignments during his 25 years long service career. He also spoke about the BOG Chairman, how he is always actively involved in guiding IIT Patna and manages time for the institute from his busy schedule. He then discussed in detail the various academic, research, student, infrastructure development, start-ups, Technology Incubation Hub (TIH), outreach, industry-academia, placements, Continuing Education Programme, and alumni- related activities that are taking place in the institute.
A total of 630 students were awarded degree. Out of 630 students, 515 male and 115 female students will be given degrees among various programs, which include B.Tech, M.Sc., M.Tech, and Ph.D. A total of around 335, 73, 90, 132 students will be awarded degree for B.Tech, M.Sc., M.Tech, and Ph.D respectively.
The degrees were awarded in various branches of engineering, science, and social sciences which include Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Mechatronics.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IIT Patna Dr. Anand Deshpande welcomed all the dignitaries present. He congratulated the graduates and emphasized the importance of their contributions to society. He highlighted the lessons of ‘responsible living’ learned during the pandemic and India’s G20 theme of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” He discussed IIT Patna’s focus on entrepreneurship and innovation, including new programs in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. He praised the institution’s efforts in academic excellence and community outreach, and extended gratitude to parents and well-wishers for their support. The Chairman also welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. N. Kalaiselvi, lauding her distinguished contributions to electrochemical power systems and energy storage technologies.
The Guest of Honour R. K. Pathak welcomed all the dignitaries present. He especially welcomed the graduating students, parents, the press and media people. R.K. Pathak congratulated the graduates, praising the institute’s achievements and the leadership of Director Prof. T.N. Singh. Highlighting IIT Patna’s contributions to science and technology, he emphasized the importance of aligning innovations with societal needs and mentoring smaller institutes. He encouraged graduates to embrace challenges, learn from failures, and stay connected to their roots while striving for excellence. Quoting Nelson Mandela, Pathak urged them to persist through setbacks and make meaningful contributions to their fields. He wished the graduates success and reminded them to cherish the support and guidance they received at IIT Patna.
The Institute registrar in charge, Sanjay Kumar proposed the Vote of Thanks, which was followed by the Chairman BOG declaring the 10th Convocation closed. This was followed by National Anthem and the return of Academic Procession.
The dress-code for the convocation for males were kept as the white color knee-level Pyjama Kurta and for female white colour salwar suit/saree. Around 366 students received the degree in person while for other degrees, received in absentia, would be send by post.
On the day of convocation, in addition to degrees, following medals and prizes were awarded to outstanding students under following categories.
President of India Gold Medal (01) BATTURI JASWANTH, Computer Science and Engineering. Director’s Gold Medal (01) GOGINENI CHARISHMA: She said; It is really great that I got Director’s Medal. I worked hard and I got success.” She said; I work for the development of Nation as a whole.
GOGINENI CHARISHMA’s Mother is alumni of IIT Roorkee & her younger sister is also persuing B.Tech from one of the IIT.

AAROOJ YASIN ALI (CBE); Institute Proficiency Prizes (17) which is awarded to encourage good quality research project work (best Project- BTP/MTP) leading to partial fulfilment for the award of UG/PG degree (i.e. B.Tech./M.Tech./M.Sc.) in respective branch of studies.
On the 10th convocation, many parents also witnessed this historic moment. The students were overwhelmed by receiving degrees and medals. The faces of the students lit up with enthusiasm. The convocation ceremony of the largest batch of IIT Patna so far was memorable and spectacular.
