Patna : 7th December 2022 :: The 9th Convocation of Indian Institute of Technology Patna was held on 7th December 2022 at the institute premises. The event was graced by the Chief Guest Jalaj A. Dani, Chairman, Addverb Technologies Ltd., the Guest of honour Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy, Scientific advisor to Defence Minister, and Dr. Anand Desh Pandey, Chairman & Board of Governors, IIT Patna, Board Members and Members of Senate of IIT Patna.
The event started with the academic procession entering the convocation venue followed by the invocation through the National song. The chairman BOG’s then declared the 9th convocation of IIT Patna open. Mementos were presented to the dignitaries on the dias. At the onset of the event Director IIT Patna, Prof. T. N. Singh welcomed all the eminent dignitaries, the graduating students and their parents, the guest, members of media from electronic and print, institute faculty, and staff. It was then followed by the Institute report wherein he stated that in the recently released MDRA Survey 2022 conducted by INDIA TODAY group, IIT Patna ranked 10th among the “Government Engineering Colleges”, 9th in the “Government Colleges with Placement Record” and 2nd in the “Emerging Government Engineering College”. In “India Rankings 2021 and 2022 by NIRF MoE”, IIT Patna is positioned 21st and 33rd respectively among engineering institutions of the country and is positioned at 51st and 59th for overall ranking respectively. Further, the Ministry of Education, Government of India has initiated ‘Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) to systematically rank education institutions and universities primarily on innovation related indicators. He was happy to share that IIT Patna was categorized in band of excellence. These indicators have inspired the institute to reorient their mindset and build ecosystems to encourage high- quality research, innovation, and entrepreneurship. He discussed in detail about the various academic, research, student, Infrastructure development, start- up, Technology Incubation Hub (TIH), Outreach and Industry- Academia, Alumni related activities which are taking place in the institute.
A total of 521 students were awarded degree. Out of 521 students, a total of 422 male and 99 female students were given degrees among various programs which include B.Tech, M.Sc., M.Tech, and Ph.D. A total of 242, 64, 113, 102 students were awarded degree for B.Tech, M.Sc., M.Tech, and Ph.D respectively.
The degrees were awarded in various branches of engineering, science, and social sciences which include Civil and Environmental Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Chemical and Biochemical Engineering, Humanities and Social Science, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mathematics and Computing, and Mechatronics.
The Chairman of the Board of Governors of the IIT Patna Dr. Anand Deshpande welcomed all the dignitaries present. He noted that this is a momentous occasion and an essential landmark in students’ academic journey. He wished them all the best as they enter the excitingnew world of challenges, opportunities, and responsibility. He firmly believed that the ongoing drive on “Entrepreneurship and Innovation” that is being offered at IIT Patna gets boost from the new academic degree programs including executive M- Tech programs, integrated dual degree B-Tech in Mechanical Engineering with NITIE, Mumbai (proposed to be renamed and upgraded as Indian Institute of Management Mumbai (IIM Mumbai)), and M -Tech program in Artificial Intelligence and DataScience in collaboration with Vishleshan Technology Innovation Hub. He highlighted the fact that apart from the core academic duties, the faculty members and students have been engaged in helping the local, mostly rural community around Bihta through various outreach programs like Adhyayan and Prayatna. He was confidentthat IIT Patna’s contributions to society will continue to grow in the years to come. He extended his warm welcome to all who accepted the invitation to be present. He thanked the parents and the well-wishers ofyoung students graduating today. He extended his heartiest congratulations to the graduates from Patna. Furthermore, he extended his best wishes and blessings to the students as they join the work force on their way to becoming leading technocrats, researchers, entrepreneurs, and academicians of the future. He thanked and convey his best wishes to all the other students, faculty, and staff members of IIT Patna for their relentless efforts towardseeking excellence.
The Guest of Honour Dr. G. Satheesh Reddy emphasized the Prime Minister of India’s vision of Make- In- India program and how it has boosted the Indian manufacturing unit including those related to Indian defence. Many positive indigenous efforts are coming up in the country. Many activities in the defence sector are catering to the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Some examples were how India is now producing the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, indigenous developed Gun (long range in 155 mm category) and was fired on 15th August, commissioned indigenously build aircraft carrier Vikarant. Many students are joining PhD program in IIT. India is becoming a hub for Drones. Funding upto 50 crores is possible now from DRDO related to defence related technology development. India is looking forwarded to not only Make in India but also Make in World approach. This requires innovative and crucial R&D activities in product development and he looked forward to IIT Patna participating enthusiastically and playing an important role. Recently, 13,000 cores of defence equipment have been exported by India. He ended his speech by congratulating all the graduating students and IIT Patna for their 9th Convocation.
The Chief Guest Jalaj A. Dani, congratulated graduating students and extend his deepest gratitude to Chairmanof the Board of Governors of the IIT Patna Dr. Anand Deshpande, Distinguished members of the Board of Governors, Director of the Institute Prof. T. N. Singh, Members of the Academic Senate, and Members of the Faculty and Staff for the invitation. He noted that Patna is very close to the ancient capital where Siddhartha became an ascetic, eventually becoming the Gautama Buddha. Therefore, IIT Patna is needless to say having been at the centre of knowledge hub and the students here have been nurtured to be the best. He motivated students to enjoy their work, explore unconventional ways, reinvent themselves, and to push beyond the limit’s life provides. He encouraged students to evolve and adapt over time. He concluded his speech by congratulating graduating students again and wishing them good luck. He discussed the five Credos to succeed in life. He asked students to never ever give up and practice perseverance. He recognized that the co-founder of one of the drone technologies is IIT Patna alumni graduating in this convocation and present in the audience.
He talked about the leadership is relentless pursuit to excellence. He ended his speech by congratulating all the graduating students, families, and welcomed them to real world and to keep faith in the event of adversity.

Several other were given the Institute Proficiency Prizes which is awarded to encourage good quality research project work (best Project- BTP/MTP) leading to partial fulfilment for the award of UG/PG degree ( i.e.B.Tech/BS/M.Tech) in respective branch of studies.
The Institute registrar, Vishwa Ranjan proposed the Vote of Thanks, which was followed by the Chairman BOG declaring the 9th Convocation closed. This was followed by National Anthem and the return of Academic Procession.
The dress-code for the convocation for males were kept as the white color knee -level Pyjama Kurta and for female white colour salwar suit/saree. Around 265 students would be receiving degree in person while for other degrees would be send by post.
